Where memory meets modern living

description

After years away from a childhood neighbourhood, the chance to return to the same block became a meaningful turning point in the homeowner’s search for a permanent home. Now shared with a partner, this five-room resale flat has been thoughtfully reimagined by OVON into a calm, contemporary space that balances familiarity with a renewed sense of purpose, designed to support the rhythms of everyday life.

The redesign begins at the entrance, where the original layout has been carefully reworked to create a meaningful arrival sequence. “One of the main challenges was creating a more intentional entryway, as the common bathroom was originally the first thing in view upon entering the home,” says Kale Sitchon, designer from OVON who envisioned the new concept for the home. “There needed to be an element that subtly screened it off, making the arrival feel more considered and welcoming.”

This has been resolved through the introduction of a full-height cabinet that defines the foyer while offering practical storage. On its reverse, the same element integrates seamlessly into the kitchen, concealing larger appliances and creating a more cohesive visual flow between spaces.

As the layout opens into an expanded kitchen designed to support the homeowners’ daily routines of cooking and baking, the space is kept visually clean, with wood laminates and restrained detailing. Just beyond the kitchen, a movable island introduces a layer of flexibility to the dining area. Designed to be tucked away against a beam, it can be pulled out when more space is needed, functioning as an extended dining surface when hosting. Hidden storage ensures additional seating remains accessible without cluttering the space.

From here, the dining and living areas form a continuous communal zone that enhances the sense of openness. In the living room, the design is deliberately pared back, allowing subtle curves and textures to define the space. “As the homeowners preferred a greater sense of height, the ceiling was kept as high as possible,” says Kale, adding, “Instead, an L-shaped ceiling detail with gently curved edges, which is echoed throughout the home, was introduced, adding soft ambient lighting while maintaining an open feel.”

Off the living area, a study provides a quiet and adaptable space for work or reading. Sliding doors with lattice and fluted panels allow light to filter through while maintaining a degree of privacy. Opposite, an arched niche has been designed to accommodate a cherished travel shelf, turning a practical requirement into a focal feature.

The master bedroom continues the home’s calm and restrained palette. A taupe limewash wall anchors the bedhead, introducing texture while concealing air-conditioning services. Above, a circular cove detail casts a soft, ambient glow, reinforcing the sense of height and comfort. A nearly four-metre wardrobe runs along one wall, with a small glass display incorporated for a quiet, personal touch without overwhelming the space.

In the bathrooms, material choices balance simplicity with visual interest. The common bathroom is kept understated, with soft tones and marble-patterned finishes, while the master bathroom is expanded to feel more generous. Terrazzo surfaces in the shower stall introduce texture, creating a space that is both functional and stylish.

What emerges is a home planned around use: open where it needs to be, flexible where it matters, and quietly personal throughout.
