The young, bubbly couple who own this five-room BTO love to host and enjoy boardgames and arts and crafts. Their new Yishun home, however, had a long living room that felt awkward to use. The brief to Blend by IMC therefore was to make it cosy and well connected, a space for time together and for having friends over.
“We designed a bespoke partition as an anchor for the living room,” says Ka from Blend by IMC, who worked on this project with fellow interior designer Yan. “One side creates a privacy screen and TV wall for the sofa area while the other frames the dining table, providing seats and useful storage.” A settee also extends to the foyer, with space for shoes below.
Where a TV would usually go, a recessed wall holds display niches instead, enlivened by diffused light through a fluted glass cutout in the partition.
In the kitchen, the homeowners eventually decided on a door at the service yard. “It would essentially make the kitchen smaller, but we were able to provide an aesthetic solution,” says Yan. The answer is “dimpled” frosted glass, used on the door and in a circular opening by the sink. It filters in a warm glow that brings out the richness of the wood laminate, which runs through the cabinetry and up to the ceiling beam and door frames around the two columns. A green Kit Kat tile backsplash pairs well with the wood finish.
Integrated into the bedroom’s custom bed frame, the side tables are tailored to their preferences. One has a built-in mirror and drawers for small essentials. At the end of the room, a full-height wardrobe holds pull-out accessory trays and compartments for long dresses.
The study reflects the couple’s eclectic sensibilities, from shaker cabinets to colourful floating shelves with a touch of geometry on the side, making it a joyful space for work and hobbies.
In the master bathroom, emerald tiles bring in a hint of nature, mimicking an outdoor shower, while their rejuvenating hues complement the dark wood vanity.
Apart from the dining table, all the carpentry was crafted locally by the studio’s in-house carpenters.
