Moving from a five-room HDB flat to a 530-square-foot River Valley condominium meant recalibrating expectations — and rethinking how space should function day to day. For this couple, the priority wasn’t decorative flourish but practical liveability: enough storage for daily routines, room to host friends, and a layout that didn’t feel constrained by its compact footprint.
Although the newly built apartment came with marble flooring and built-in cabinetry, the original layout separated the bedroom and living area in a way that limited flexibility. Artistroom removed that wall and introduced a custom cabinetry system in its place — a dual-sided installation that acts as divider, storage core and entertainment wall while keeping wiring discreetly concealed.
This intervention also allowed the home to accommodate the owner’s extensive collection of sound equipment and media players without overwhelming the interiors. Storage was distributed deliberately throughout the apartment, from concealed compartments to bedroom-specific built-ins, ensuring each zone supports its purpose without relying on excess furniture.
Entertaining remained an important part of the brief. Between the kitchen and living area, a curved built-in banquette pairs with an organically shaped Ferm Living dining table to form a compact dining nook that feels integrated rather than improvised. The banquette continues into the television console so both elements read as a single built-in feature, freeing up floor area while maintaining generous concealed storage.
In the bedroom, the standard wardrobe was replaced with tailored storage elements, including a storage bedframe, integrated headboard shelving and a secondary entertainment setup embedded into the reverse side of the divider. Together, these moves allow the apartment to function with the efficiency of a larger home while remaining visually calm.
High ceilings were left untouched to retain the apartment’s airy proportions, while doors were extended to full height to reinforce the vertical emphasis. Lighting remains deliberately understated, adding warmth and depth without introducing visual clutter.
The result is a carefully resolved downsized home that demonstrates how compact apartments don’t rely on dramatic styling to succeed — only disciplined planning, purposeful storage and a layout that genuinely reflects how its owners live.
