Founded by Magnus Wästberg in 2008, Swedish lighting brand Wästberg has a simple yet meaningful mission: to create well-being through good light. The company collaborates with renowned architects and designers like David Chipperfield, Inga Sempé and Ilse Crawford, blending advanced technology with human-centric design to produce lighting solutions that are as elegant as they are functional.
Wästberg’s manifesto, Lamps for Neanderthal Man, advocates a return to light that feels natural and comforting, akin to the glow of a modern-day ‘fire’. This perspective drives their designs, which aim to create inviting atmospheres that cater to essential human needs, from productivity to relaxation.
Each product is thoughtfully crafted to balance measurable qualities, like brightness, with intangible elements such as warmth and mood, ensuring that their lights feel as good as they look. By focusing on the essential human connection to light, Wästberg addresses both physical needs and emotional comfort, creating products that offer more than mere illumination.
Here are some of their stunning creations.
Designed by David Chipperfield, w102 reimagines the classic desk light with a refined, minimalist touch. Available as desk, wall, floor and pin-mounted versions, it can be used in different settings, making it a perfect solution for both home and office.
Practical yet playful, w153 Île sees designer Inga Sempé revisiting the simple yet clever clamp lamps of her childhood. The lamp can be easily positioned in different areas and is both functional and decorative, bringing a dash of colour and light to any space.
With its sculptural curves inspired by a sine wave, w171 Alma is discreet yet fascinating with its sculptural feel and soft contrast between light and shadow. Beneath the deceptively simple curves lies true craftsmanship, where expertly shaped aluminium is used to capture the smooth waves.
An update of the classic library lamp, w203 Ilumina draws on innovative lighting technology while reflecting the brand’s passion for materials to deliver a warm and inviting ambience. It offers directed light with clear yet gentle definition that is both comforting and practical, making it ideal for both homes and workspaces.
With over 50 design awards, Wästberg has redefined standards in the lighting industry. Combining innovation, meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful design, the brand goes beyond mere illumination. Each piece brings a sense of warmth, comfort and aesthetic beauty, transforming homes and spaces into inviting, well-lit sanctuaries.
