Colour is an incredible tool that you can use to create a desired mood in your home. In 2025, we round up some wonderful ways that you can utilise them, be it sticking to a single shade or going all out with different colour combinations.
Colour drenching – the method of saturating a space in a single shade – has garnered increasing attention and it’s easy to see why. Colour drenching can create various desired effects in a room such as eliminating distractions, amplifying a mood or emotion, or expanding or contracting the perception of space.
Some practical tips:
1. Lighting significantly impacts the final look of colour drenching. Natural light can soften the effect, while artificial light can intensify it.
2. Introducing subtle variations in texture within the same colour (example, matte versus glossy finishes) helps prevent the space from feeling flat.
3. While dramatic, it’s important to avoid overwhelming a space. Complementary accents (example, plants and neutral tones) can help balance the aesthetic.
Tile grouting is not a detail that most people pay much attention too, and they are often a generic white in most homes. However, did you know that grouting is available in different colours?
You can choose a grout colour in a complementary tone to your tiles, or pick a bold and contrasting shade to get an entirely different look. It’s really up to your creativity and imagination.
Don’t be afraid to play with patterned tiles. They are great way to introduce colour and fun into your home and there are ways you can incorporate them without going overboard. To do it tastefully, pick designs that carry the same or complementary shade to the key areas of your space. You can also place patterned tiles in areas that you wish to bring more attention too.
Natural shades are the most go-to palette in homes as they are easy on the eye, match everything, and create a warm and soothing ambience. However, if you find them a bit bland and want to give your space a bit of personality, coloured accent features will do the trick. For example, woodgrain-patterned kitchen cabinets are a dime a dozen, but adding handles or knobs in a contrasting colour changes the look entirely.
