Within nine short weeks, this modest apartment located in East Coast was transformed into a serene, nature-inspired retreat for a couple. With a renovation budget of $73,000 and a clear design vision, Ellba Tang from Intheory Design enhanced spatial flow by opening up the compact space and providing additional utility functions within the prescribed floor area.

The overarching design philosophy was rooted in the concept of an oasis retreat, emphasising a biophilic approach that harmonises with the lush greenery visible from the apartment’s windows. “The homeowners envisioned a quiet, cosy sanctuary to unwind after demanding workdays,” Ellba explains.

Their desire for a warm, natural palette informed the material selection, including wood finishes and stone textures that evoke the tranquillity of nature. This is immediately apparent upon entry, wherein the cabinetry at the foyer is clad with wood laminates that extend to the kitchen cabinetry and the ceilings of these two spaces.

Nestled between them is the dry pantry which Intheory Design incorporated despite space constraints. “The dry pantry was a must-have for the homeowners, so the layout was meticulously planned to achieve a balance between functionality and spatial fluidity,” Ellba shares. It ended up being a wonderful focal point of the living space. Considering the couple’s affinity for coffee and cooking, the L-shaped island is an efficient workhorse that nurtures their avocations.

The kitchen redesign epitomises thoughtful planning and spatial optimisation, converting a single-row kitchen with glass partitions to a double-row layout, maximising utility and efficiency. By integrating the dry and wet zones, and seamlessly connecting them to the laundry yard and storeroom, the layout enhances both functionality and aesthetic coherence.

Terrazzo tiled flooring paired with rose gold metal strips artfully delineates the kitchen from the adjoining living areas, while Artisan Moss Green tiles from Hafary on the curved niche wall at the dry pantry introduced a dynamic visual interest through their varying reflective shades.

“The owners’ preference for curved forms was incorporated into the design to soften angles, giving the compact space a sense of flow and cohesion,” notes Ellba. The geometric shape became a unifying design motif throughout the home with features such as curved edges on the carpentry, false ceiling, wall niches, furniture, mirrors and even door handles.

The living and dining areas embody a carefully calibrated balance between utility and visual sophistication. The flooring, clad in large-format grey tiles from Hafary, establishes a cohesive foundation that flows seamlessly throughout the apartment.

The dining space is anchored by a custom-designed table featuring a natural stone top, its timeless elegance complemented by dark green dining chairs that introduce a vibrant yet harmonious contrast. Above, brass pendant lights serve as a sculptural focal point, imbuing the space with understated luxury.

In the living area, simplicity reigns. The TV feature wall incorporates subtle negative space and a continuation of curved design elements to ensure visual harmony. “The TV console was designed with shaker-style and louvred panels, merging form with function,” explains Ellba. This dual-purpose feature accommodates ventilation and digital signals for electronic equipment while maintaining a clean, clutter-free appearance. Soft, automatic day curtains frame the home’s picturesque garden view, diffusing natural light to create an airy, serene atmosphere.

The master bathroom was transformed into a sanctuary of tranquillity, defined by its luxurious sunken bath framed by grey stone tiles and warm wooden accents. A striking green feature wall adds vibrancy, while beige-white sand tiles balance the palette.

“Gold fittings from Grohe and the matte-veined Marmor Quartz countertop by Melmer Stoneworks elevate the space, infusing it with a quiet sophistication,” says Ellba. The replacement of the sliding door with a clear glass panel allows natural light to permeate the space, fostering openness and continuity between the bathroom and adjoining bedroom.

This renovation demonstrates how compact spaces can be transformed into personalised sanctuaries. Through the strategic use of natural materials, organic forms, and meticulous spatial planning, Intheory Design has created a haven that reflects the homeowners’ lifestyle while fostering a profound sense of retreat.
