Crumbs interior turns a five-room resale flat into a family haven filled with soothing colours and elements of wabi sabi.
Home Type: 5-room HDB flat
Floor Area: 1,300sqft
With a young kid and a newborn, the owners of this five-room resale flat in Jurong wanted their home to be a cosy oasis with wabi-sabi, nature-inspired spaces where they could all relax together as a family.
To help them realise their vision, the designers at Crumbs Interior have used soothing colours and grounding textures across the home, as well as gentle, curved features that lend softness to the space, and with consideration to the safety of the young ones. Smart home features have also been incorporated, bringing ease and convenience to the family’s daily routines.
Given that the family needed a large communal space, the designers have reconfigured the layout so that the living and dining area feels more open and spacious and functions as the heart of the home. “We shifted the study/piano room to achieve this, while also maintaining the original locations of the common bedrooms,” say the designers.
An existing exterior wall of glass blocks does a wonderful job of drawing sunlight into the space while further emphasising the wabi-sabi scheme. Strategic light placements within the false ceiling also bring a warm atmosphere into the home.
With the needs of the family in mind, the designers have factored a good amount of seamless storage into the design scheme. The television wall features hidden, wall-to-wall storage, cleverly concealing everything while maintaining a clean look. It also includes discreet, concealed doors leading to the two common bedrooms, ensuring a smooth, uninterrupted design flow.
The bathrooms are elegantly designed and exude a modern spa-like ambience. “We selected large format textured tiles in beige/light taupe tones to adhere to the wabi-sabi theme, and paired them with tiles of a different texture but in similar colour tones to serve as design accents,” say the designers.
To fit in a king-size bed and a wardrobe large enough to accommodate the couple’s needs, the designers have enlarged the room and repositioned the bedroom entrance. A large, curved ceiling feature effectively hides a beam and along with the soothing scheme, evoke a cosy cave-like vibe.
With its beautiful interpretation of wabi-sabi interiors, Crumbs Interior has given the family a home that they can enjoy for many years to come.
