A minimalist interior can be a tricky one to design as it takes a well-trained eye to decide what works and what doesn’t. However, Creative Art Director Ivan Soong from MynMyn Studio has done it brilliantly in this HDB flat in Woodlands, using all the right elements to bring forth a look of effortless simplicity. Renovated at a cost of $50,000, the flat caters to a client with a fine appreciation for art.

“The homeowner envisioned a simple home to showcase his sculptures and decorative pieces. It also had to be easy to maintain,” says Ivan, who efficiently delivered on the brief in just 10 weeks.

Used lavishly throughout the home and even in the kitchen, vinyl flooring, which requires minimal maintenance, conveys textural warmth with its herringbone pattern, and pairs well with the soft and muted wall colour. A few statement furniture pieces, like a custom-made sofa from Seat Warehouse and a dining table from Island Living, enhance the inviting ambience with their warm tones.

The open and spacious communal area also dials up the minimalist appeal. To achieve this, the team demolished one of the bedrooms and converted the space into the dining area.

“The homeowner envisioned a simple home to showcase his sculptures and decorative pieces. It also had to be easy to maintain,” says Ivan, who efficiently delivered on the brief in just 10 weeks.

Every piece of the homeowner’s carefully curated art and decor collection has a rightful place in the home. Ivan says: “There are dedicated display areas for his sculptures and decorative ornaments, ensuring they are prominently showcased without overwhelming the space.”

Providing architectural interest, arched ceilings mark the transition into different spaces. The arch detail is especially prominent in the foyer, where Ivan has built an additional wall for privacy.

While the kitchen harmonises with the home’s muted colour palette, the cabinet’s carpentry work bestows depth to the overall scheme.

With the homeowner not needing another bathroom, Ivan turned the common bathroom into a powder room. A smooth application of cement screed on the walls enhances its minimalist appeal.

The master bathroom follows suit with the cement screeded wall finish lending warmth and texture. Against this neutral colour scheme, Grohe sanitary fittings in matte black make a striking modern statement.

The master bedroom features a sleek and ‘barely-there’ wardrobe that appears to recede into the wall, and the space is the epitome of restful elegance. Simple rustic furniture from Island Living give the space an effortlessly stylish, relaxed vibe.

“With this being our client’s first home, our role was to combine and refine his ideas into a cohesive design,” says Ivan. A minimalist retreat done right, this HDB flat feels authentic and liveable, and never like an art gallery.
