Notion of W incorporated the couple’s love for Mickey Mouse into this home in a subtle manner. Semi-circle openings playfully imitate the shape of a mouse hole without seeming kitsch or childish, making this home truly one of a kind.
“We used camouflage and diversion to beautify the space while enhancing the user experience,” says Wein Goh, Design Director of Notion of W who created a unique mosaic feature that crawls from the kitchen backsplash to the walls and ceiling, creating the illusion of a mysterious and deeper space. The greyscale mosaic tiles and textured walls are not only picturesque, they imbue the home with a memorable identity.
As the original unit had a standard boxed-up layout with uneven space distribution, the designers removed the majority of the non-structural walls to open up the flat, expanding the size of the rooms to fit the couple’s requirements. As homeowners who enjoy hosting their wide social circle, the living, dining and kitchen spaces now flow seamlessly like an enlarged hall. Pops of colour make it visually exciting.
A combination of intricate patterns, chevron floors, selective colours and textured walls set the backdrop for details that convey the couple’s unique taste – doorknobs were custom-made in the iconic shape of Mickey Mouse’s head.
The designers have opted for many curves and rounded edges in the home to break away from the typology of a standard HDB flat. Pixel-like mosaic tiles of varying shades of grey are repeated within a circular frame.
The corridor leading to the bathroom was kept minimal with greyscale textures and plants that add colour while keeping the air fresh. The opened bathroom door frames the feature wall in the toilet, which is composed of wood-look tiles that add to the home’s rich tapestry.
