For the renovation of this Punggol resale flat, interior designer Sophia Yeong and her team at The Interior Lab embraced the challenge of creating a modern classic design that was both elegant and family-friendly.She says: “The homeowners are busy professionals with demanding careers, and they have two young children. Family time is precious to them and they wanted ample space at home to bond and play with their energetic kids.”
Noting the homeowners’ preferences for shaker-style cabinetry and fluted panels, Sophia decided the modern colonial style would be ideal. “It has the timeless style they adore. Furthermore, with the monochromatic colours, we can emphasise a brighter atmosphere and a visually larger space,” she shares.
By reconfiguring the layout of the communal zones, the sense of space has been significantly enhanced. Sophia demolished the kitchen walls, including the one to the service yard, to create an open-concept design, fostering a more expansive and connected environment.
The open-plan layout seamlessly combines the living, dining, and kitchen areas, creating an effortless flow between spaces. This thoughtfully refreshed design optimises the available space, making it ideal for a child-friendly home where the kids have plenty of room to run and play.
While the kitchen countertops and backsplash are cohesively finished in sintered stone surfaces from Hua Kian, two distinct flooring types are used to differentiate the main kitchen from the adjoining zones. Monochromatic patterned tiles from Hafary define one area, while wood-patterned vinyl flooring from Floor Xpert adds warmth and contrast to the other.
For the cabinetry, Sophia incorporated shaker-style doors on kitchen cabinets as well as the doors concealing the shoe cabinets and household shelter. Her meticulous design execution emphasises discreet yet highly practical storage solutions, resulting in a tidy and easy-to-maintain family home.
A soothing colour palette of warm whites envelops the master bedroom, creating a serene and visually appealing atmosphere. To add depth and avoid the muted tones appearing flat, Sophia incorporated a glass display window into the L-shaped wardrobe. Combined with the refined shaker door details, the wardrobe design exudes both sophistication and modern elegance.
Adopting a classic monochromatic scheme, the master bathroom features wall tiles with a luxurious marble-like finish. These pristine surfaces are elegantly contrasted by darker accents, such as the black shower screen frame and sanitary fittings, adding depth and sophistication to the space.
While practicality is paramount in a family home, aesthetics were certainly not overlooked in this thoughtfully designed Punggol resale flat. Sophia has masterfully created a comfortable, modern colonial-style home that not only meets the needs of the growing family but also exudes timeless charm and style.
