Curves are a dominating trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, and this HDB flat designed by Vanessa Song and Carolyn Koh from Indoor Art Studio embraces these shapely forms beautifully.
“The homeowners were enthused about having a home full of curves – with all beams and edges rounded. The wabi-sabi style also appealed to them, but with less wood and more creamy undertones,” shares Vanessa, the studio’s Creative Director.
The project was done within a renovation budget of $80,000. To get the three-month renovation underway, the designers’ first task was to find the right contractor who specialised in curved partitions. The homeowners also had fengshui requirements that had to be worked into the design.
These challenges didn’t deter the designers from carving out a peaceful haven elevated by graceful curves. Ushering a relaxed sense of elegance is the open-concept kitchen’s rounded island counter. It’s topped with a travertine-inspired material combo of laminates from EDL and a countertop from Bellus. An artificial skylight and a grotto-like storage niche highlight the island counter’s captivating curved form.
By demolishing the wall to the service yard, the kitchen feels airier and more spacious. A low-lying beam has been curved to soften the angular kitchen layout.
Like the inviting kitchen, the dining area welcomes interaction with its shapely details. The designers have carved out space from a common bedroom to accommodate a curved wall that aligns with the concrete bench. The adjacent room is now the study and the glass blocks let light through.
Curvilinear walls create an organic flow and lend a refreshing perspective to the living room. The designers highlighted the curved corners with shelving and a full-height custom cabinet bearing wood-look laminates from Lam Chuan. A curved sofa from Castlery further enhances the cosy setting.
The master bedroom has undergone quite a transformation, having been combined with a common bedroom. Vanessa says: “We wanted to incorporate a walk-in wardrobe into the master suite and did that with extra space from the common bedroom.” The combined bedrooms follow the same language of curves with an arched doorway connecting the two spaces and a pocket sliding door for privacy.
By emphasising the beauty of every curved element in this flat, the designers have drawn out a feel-good sanctuary that allows the homeowners to totally unwind after a hard day’s work.
